DaVinci Resolve Fusion vs. Premiere Pro: which is better for UI animation and screen mockups?

Fusion is the stronger tool for building UI animation and screen mockups from scratch — its node-based tools handle animated widgets, cursors, scan lines, and camera-tracked overlays that Premiere Pro can't build natively. Premiere Pro is faster when you're dropping template-driven graphics (Essential Graphics, MOGRTs) into an edit. Custom mockup → Fusion; speed inside an edit → Premiere.

Fusion: custom screen mockups and UI animation. A documented Fusion workflow turns a static desktop screenshot into a cinematic screen animation using vignettes, motion-graphic overlays, luma keying, bevels, bouncy text, an animated mouse cursor, scan lines, dust overlays, and a camera zoom — and the creator's assessment was direct: "that took us like 5 or 10 minutes. It was not complicated at all, and it looks better than 99% of the stuff on YouTube." The specific techniques transfer to any UI mockup: animate widget pop-ins by offsetting the width and height keyframe sequences by 1–2 frames with S-curve easing (press S on selected spline keyframes for ease-in/ease-out) — the offset is what makes the entry feel bouncy and organic instead of a mechanical pop. Route cursor movement along a curved B-spline path rather than straight keyframes so it reads as human. Use the Quick Bevel node to give flat widget backgrounds and icons depth, apply Edge Detect as an adjustment clip for a subtle glow, and layer two scan-line instances rotated 90° to each other at high frequency and low sharpness to simulate a real dot-matrix screen — keep scan lines on their own adjustment clip so you can fade them independently. A dust overlay at around 8% opacity adds film texture over the composite. Fusion's Tracker also locks these overlays — cards, labels, rectangles — to objects in moving footage, which Premiere cannot do without leaving the app; if your mockup sits inside an AI-generated clip (for example, footage produced through the invideo agent), the tracker keeps the overlay pinned through the camera move.

Premiere Pro: speed and template-driven graphics inside an edit. Premiere's layer-based Essential Graphics panel and MOGRT templates get standard UI callouts, lower thirds, and device-frame mockups on screen faster than building nodes, and the community consensus backs this: layer-based motion graphics are generally easier to work in than Fusion's node graph, and several editors find the Fusion page overkill for simple motion graphics. Premiere is also where documented AI-film pipelines do final assembly and finishing — Lumetri RGB curves and hue-saturation curves for color matching (even a 1% color variance between clips is visible at rest), multi-track mixing, and the cut itself. If your UI graphics are a supporting element inside a larger edit, staying in Premiere avoids a round-trip.

Learning curve and the deciding factors. Fusion's node graph is the steeper climb — but the documented screen-animation build above shows a focused UI workflow is learnable in one session, not weeks. Decide on three factors: complexity (custom, animated, or camera-tracked mockups → Fusion; templated callouts → Premiere), context (graphics as the deliverable → Fusion; graphics inside an edit → Premiere), and reuse (a Fusion node tree is reusable across projects; MOGRTs are faster to swap but shallower to customize). One documented practice worth adopting either way: don't rely solely on generated or stock footage — replacing select shots with custom Fusion animations is what separates a polished piece from generic output.
