How do you use Edge Detect in DaVinci Resolve to create a cinematic halation glow?

Apply Edge Detect as a Resolve FX on an adjustment clip placed above your footage, then push it from outline to glow: increase edge blur and edge width, keep brightness low, and composite in Screen or Add mode at reduced opacity. The blurred edges bloom around highlights and contrast lines, reading as soft halation rather than a graphic outline.
Edge Detect ships as a Resolve FX, and the key decision is applying it to an adjustment clip rather than to each clip directly — one instance then glows every clip underneath it, and you can trim, fade, or delete the effect without touching your footage. The principle from a documented Resolve workflow: Edge Detect applied as an adjustment clip creates a subtle glow that makes footage look dreamy rather than flat.
Step 1 — Add an adjustment clip. On the Edit page, drag an adjustment clip from the Effects Library onto the video track above the clips you want treated, stretched to cover the section.
Step 2 — Apply Edge Detect to the adjustment clip. Open the Effects Library, find Edge Detect under Resolve FX, and drop it onto the adjustment clip. By default it renders hard graphic outlines — the next step converts that into halation.
Step 3 — Tune it from outline to glow. Increase edge blur and edge width while keeping brightness low — that combination is what turns crisp contour lines into a soft bloom. As working values: bring Half-Edge Gain down to roughly 0.3 and push blur into the 15–25px range so no discrete line survives, only diffused light hugging the high-contrast edges.
Step 4 — Composite it back over the image. Set the adjustment clip's composite mode to Screen or Add and pull opacity down to roughly 20–40%. Screen gives a gentler, filmic bloom; Add reads hotter and more stylized. At full opacity the effect looks like a filter; at low opacity it looks like a lens.
Step 5 — Warm the glow. Real halation skews warm. On the same adjustment clip, nudge the color wheels toward orange so the bloom carries a warm cast instead of neutral white.
Step 6 — Keep each effect on its own adjustment clip. If you're layering this with grain, dust, or other texture passes, give each one a separate adjustment clip so it can be faded or removed independently — the same reasoning applies as with scan-line passes in Resolve, which are deliberately kept on their own clip for independent fade-out. For texture stacking, a documented workflow ran a dust overlay at 8% opacity alongside effects like this for a cinematic finish.
When to move to Fusion instead. In timelines with transparency stacking, generator layers, or lots of composite modes, an adjustment clip can interact unpredictably with what's below it. In those cases build the halation in the Fusion page — pipe the image through a blur node and merge it back over itself in Screen mode — which gives per-node control over threshold and falloff. A documented Fusion animation workflow put the effort in perspective: the full treatment took 5–10 minutes to build. If your source footage came out of an AI generation pipeline such as the invideo agent, this glow pass doubles as a fix for the over-sharp edge quality typical of generated video, softening it toward a filmed look.
