Why should you apply scan line effects on a separate adjustment clip in DaVinci Resolve?

Put scan line effects on their own adjustment clip in DaVinci Resolve so you can fade, disable, or retime the scan lines independently of every other effect. If scan lines share an adjustment clip with grain, glow, or dust overlays, keyframing one element's opacity drags all of them with it — isolation keeps each layer controllable on its own.

Independent fade control is the core reason. Scan line adjustment clips should sit on a separate clip from other effects specifically so they can be faded out independently — keyframe the adjustment clip's opacity and the scan lines fade in or out while your grain, glow, and underlying grade stay exactly where they are. Stack scan lines together with other effects on one adjustment clip and you lose that: any opacity ramp affects everything on the layer at once.

One clip becomes the single control point for the whole effect. The documented setup uses two instances of the Scan Lines Resolve FX rotated 90° to each other — horizontal and vertical — at high frequency and low sharpness to simulate a real dot-matrix computer screen. With both instances living on one dedicated adjustment clip, changing frequency, sharpness, or rotation updates every clip beneath it simultaneously, instead of you re-tuning the same parameters shot by shot. Trim or extend the adjustment clip to control exactly which section of the timeline gets the treatment.

It keeps the effect non-destructive and the stack modular. An adjustment clip never touches clip-level grading — each clip underneath keeps its own grade, and deleting or disabling the scan line layer removes the effect cleanly. The same isolation logic applies to the rest of a screen-simulation stack: Edge Detect applied as its own adjustment clip creates a subtle glow that keeps the animation from looking flat, and a dust overlay set to around 8% opacity sits on its own layer for cinematic texture. Each element on its own layer means each element toggles, fades, and re-orders independently. Name the layers ('Scanline Overlay', 'Glow', 'Dust') and save the scan line setup as a preset so you can drop the identical treatment into the next project.

Know the one limitation. An adjustment clip operates on the composited image below it, so if your scan lines need to interact with transparency or alpha channels — for example, applying them only to a keyed screen region — build that interaction as a Fusion composition instead of a timeline adjustment clip.

This layered pass is also what separates polished output from raw generations: if your underlying footage comes from an AI pipeline like the invideo agent, custom Resolve treatments applied on top are what create the high-budget feeling. The full screen-simulation build is fast — the creator who documented it reported the whole thing took 5–10 minutes and "looks better than 99% of the stuff on YouTube."
